Nevada Oversize Permits Information

Permits

Nevada oversize permits are valid for 5 days. Driver must have an overweight permit prior to entering the state.

Operating Time

One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, plus the following exceptions: Loads not exceeding 12 wide, 15′ high, 110′ long are permitted for night travel. Loads not exceeding 14′ wide, 15′ high, 110′ long, are permitted for weekend travel except in restricted areas noted in next section.

Restrictions

No travel is allowed on major holidays and holiday weekends. For loads exceeding 12′ wide, 15′ high, 110′ long, no weekend travel is allowed on I-80 between Sparks and California line or on I-15 between Las Vegas (exit 33) and California line. There are no weekday curfews for Las Vegas, Reno or other cities. Holiday travel is usually permitted for loads not exceeding 12 wide, 15′ high, 110′ long.

Speed Limit

Interstate routes - 70 mph. Non-interstate routes - 65mph. unless otherwise specified on permit.

Legal Dimensions

The vehicle must have the following characteristics:

  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 14′
  • Length: 53′ semi-trailer, 75′ maximum length (including rear overhang)
  • Overhang: 10′ (sum of both front and rear), (as long as length including overhang does not exceed 75′).
  • Weight: 80,000 Gross Single – 20,000 Tandem – 34,000 Tridem – 42,000

Routine Oversize Permit Limits

  • Width: 14′
  • Height: 15′
  • Length: 110′
  • Overhang: 25′ (sum of both front and rear).
  • Weight: Single – 20,000; Tandem – 46,725* Tridem – 58,000 to 59,000*; (5 axles)* (6 axles)* (7 axles)* – *Depends on spacing

Escorts

On Interstate and 4 or more lane highway:

  • Width: Over 14′ – 1 escort pilot car; over 16′ – 2 escort pilot cars; over 17′ – may require 2 escort pilot cars and Highway Patrol.
  • Height: Over 15’6″ – 1 escort pilot car with height pole
  • Length: Over 105′ – 1 escort pilot car
  • Overhang: Over 25′ front or rear – 1 escort pilot car

On 2 or 3-lane highway:

  • Width: Over 12′ – 1 escort; over 14′ – 2 escort pilot cars; over 16′ – 3 escort pilot cars, over 17′ – reviewed on an individual basis, may require 2 escort pilot cars and Highway Patrol. Hoover Dam area: width 8’6″ to 10′ (maximum allowed) – 2 escort pilot cars.
  • Height: Over 15’6″ – 1 high-pole escort
  • Length: Over 105′ – 1 escort pilot car
  • Overhang: Over 25′ front or rear – 1 escort pilot car

Security Measures

All oversized vehicles must display “Oversize Load” signs in the front and rear. Flags must be placed on all 4 corners of the load and at the maximum widths when the load is wider that vehicle. Over 4′ overhang should also display flags. Headlights must be on low beam. Signs and flags shall only be displayed when necessary.

NEVADA LIGHT PERMIT: You must have a Nevada Light Permit to run flashing revolving amber warning light(s) or even to travel with it turned off but uncovered.
