Oregon Oversize Permits Information

Permits

Oregon Oversize Permits are valid for 10 days. Driver must have the permit prior to entering the state.

Operating Time

Loads less than 10′ wide on Green Routes and less than 12′ wide on all Interstate roads or Green Routes are allowed continuous travel. All other loads are allowed travel one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, seven days a week from Labor Day to Memorial Day. Memorial Day to Labor Day, travel is restricted starting noon on Saturday and all day Sunday.

Restrictions

Loads that exceed 12′ wide are restricted movement in Portland, Salem, Eugene, Grants Pass and Medford areas from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Maximum posted limits unless otherwise specified on permit.

Legal Dimensions

The vehicle must have the following characteristics:

  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 14′
  • Length: 53′ semitrailer and no overall limit on designated routes. Group 1 routes – 60′
  • Overhang: 4′ front; 5′ rear; Rear overhang not to exceed 1/3 of wheelbase of the tractor/trailer combination.
  • Weight: 80,000 Single – 20,000 Tandem – 34,000 Tridem – Depends on spacing

Routine Permit Limits

  • Width: 16′
  • Height: 17’
  • Length: 150′
  • Weight: Single – 21,500; Tandem – 43,000; Tridem – Depends on spacing

Escorts

On Interstate and multi-lane highways:

  • Length: Over 120′ – 1 escort pilot car; over 140′ – as required on permit
  • Width: Over 14′ – 1 escort pilot car; over 16′ – as required on permit
  • Height: Over 14’6” – 1 escort pilot car

On 2-lane “green” routes:

  • Length: Over 105′ – 1 escort pilot car; over 120′ – 2 escort pilot cars; over 140′ – as required on permit
  • Width: Over 12′ – 1 escort pilot car; over 14′ – 2 escort pilot cars; over 16′ – as required on permit
  • Height: Over 14’6” – 1 escort pilot car
  • Most other 2-lane routes:
  • Length: Over 95′ – 1 escort pilot car; over 120′ – 2 escort pilot cars; over 140′ – as specified by permit

Note*: Extra restrictions and pilot cars are required on a few secondary routes

  • Width: Over 9′ – 1 escort pilot car
  • Height: Over 14’6” – 1 escort pilot car

Security Measures

“Oversize Load” are required on all wide loads and vehicle/loads over 80′ long. Flags at least 18″ square are required on all wide loads at the outermost extremities. Night travel requires illuminated lamps or marker lights at the outermost extremities. Rear overhang of 4′ or more must be marked with a flag or, in darkness with red warning lights. When width exceeds 10′ on a two-lane highway, or 12′ on a multi-lane highway, amber warning lights are required unless operating with a minimum of two pilot cars.
