Rhode Island Oversize Permits Information

Permits

Rhode Island permits are valid for five days.

Operating Time

Travel is allowed for one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. No travel is allowed on Saturday or Sunday. Overweight-only loads are allowed continuous travel Monday through Friday.

Restrictions

No travel starting 12:00 noon the day prior to major holidays and holiday weekends until sunrise of the following weekday. Victory Day (2nd Monday in August) is also a restricted travel day.

Speed Limit

Maximum posted limits unless otherwise specified on permit.

Legal Dimensions

The vehicle must have the following characteristics:

  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 13′ 6″
  • Length: Interstate and designated highways – 53′ semitrailer (41′ kingpin to center line of rear axle), other roads 48′ semitrailer
  • Overhang: 3′ front, 6′ rear
  • Weight: 80,000 Gross; Single – 22,400; Tandem – 36,000; Tridem – 42,000 with axle spacing less than 4’6″

Routine Rhode Island Oversize Permit Limits

  • Width: Determined by route and dimensions
  • Height: Determined by route and dimensions
  • Length: Determined by route and dimensions
  • Weight: Determined by spacings, usually 22,500 per axle is permitted; 5 Axles 6 Axles or 7 Axles – depends on spacings, weight, and routing, over 200,000 pounds, an outside engineering firm must survey the routes

Escorts

  • Width: Over 12′ – 1 escort, over 14’6″ – 2 escorts
  • Length: Over 80′ – 1 escort, over 90′ – 2 escorts
  • Overhang: Over 15′ – 1 escort
  • High: 14 - 1 escort and route survey require 

Security Measures

“Oversize Load” signs are required for all loads exceeding legal width, length or rear overhang. Wide loads require at least two flags, 18″ square, and up to six flags mounted at the widest extremities. Over-length vehicles require one flag if the load is less than 2′ wide and two flags if the load is more than 2′ wide. Headlights are required to be on at all times during movement of the load.
